Photographer Reserach
Name of Artist: Laurens Kaldeway
Dates of Artist’s Life: Still Alive
Laurens Kaldeway is a canadian born and raised man. Originally from Sarnia Ontario, he is currently residing in Kenora Ontario. Within his personal life, he is very passionate about teaching and his religious values. Although he loves photography, his actual occupation is teaching and parenting his sons. Kaldeway states that his photography would be absent if it wasn't for his children. Both of his children, nicknamed Fi and JoJo, are under ten years old and inspire a large amount of his photographs. Whether its his son losing his first tooth to his daughter laying down with their dog, Kaldeway's major focus is his family.
The visuality within the work of art focuses mainly on one thing. Often Kaldeway's photography is very focused one one person, place or thing. Although he has some still lifes, even those are very close up. If I had to compare this to any historical art style, I would say at quick glance these appears to be romantic era esque. Most of the photos of a child smiling or a dog laying down. However, the stories accompanying within the photos don't always follow within the romanticism genre. There is one particular photo where he took a picture of his dog after being attacked by a stray dog. Although the photo just looks like a simple dog sleeping, Kaldeways writings provided a more melancholy mood to his pristine visuality.
The central idea behind Kaldeway work is the value of family. Within his photography I don't believe there is an exact nationwide message he would like to convey. Kaldeways photography is very personal. This is in part due to the photos themselves, however, it's also because Kaldeway writes a blog post with most of his photos. Usually his photos tell the story of his family or one of his dogs, yet he has also ventures into taking very close up photos of interesting objects and still lifes. With his less family orientated photography it is often more about the details he can find within a photo. Often they show simple things with more character than originally perceived.
Kaldeway has definitely influenced my work. Often, people construct elaborate still lifes to take just one simple photo. However, Kaldeway still lifes throughout his collection are a lot more simplistic. This extends itself to Kaldeway portraits as well, the photographer seems to understand exactly how to capture young innocence. Personally, I find the most beauty within the little things in life. Kaldeway has proven to me that this quality can be incorporated within photography. In addition, I feel part of the reason that these photos are impactful is because they mean something to Kaldeway. With this, I believe Kaldeway has taught me that the best photos are influenced by the passion of the photographer.
Most of my photos actually mirror the original quite well. Although the silverware photo may not embody the same shine as the original the same mood is expressed. As for my other two photos they do have some pretty distinct differences such as different lighting with my dogs face. However as a whole, they do encompass the feeling of the original photo fairly well. In addition, the photos all have a similar black and white feel just as the originals do.
My images, similar to Kaldeway, tell my story. I too love my dog and have an interest in the simple things. The piano within my home i've played since I was eight. I have always found a very deep connection to music which has had a considerable influence in my life. As well, my dog, Carly, I begged for many months to get. The photo of her is a personal favorite of mine. As well, I am not the biggest fan of still lifes ,but my “eat” photo I enjoy. I feel the photo is very interesting and shows that a still life can be cleverly placed but also not extremely elaborate.
